SIHH '18 - Here & There: Van Cleef & Arpels Midnight Heure d'Ici et Heure d'Ailleurs
An elegant and unique format for the GMT complication.
BY Celine Yap | Jan 16, 2018 | Feature
Best known for its poetic take on horology, Van Cleef & Arpels has managed to romanticise even the most utilitarian complication, the GMT display. Heure d’Ici et Heure d’Ailleurs translates from French to time here and time there, which is the maison’s way of describing the dual time function.
A continuation of the Pierre Arpels Heure d’Ici et Heure d’Ailleurs introduced in 2014, this elegant timepiece blends the classic with the creative. Housed in the timeless Midnight case in pink gold, the unique movement offers two apertures at opposite ends of the dial, one each for local and home time, in addition to a retrograde minute display. Set through the crown, the two-hour discs advance in perfect synchronicity with the minutes, so each time the retrograde minutes hand skips from 60 to 0, so do the hours.
This self-winding timepiece has a sapphire crystal back that invites you to admire the beautiful finishing of the movement. Created exclusively for Van Cleef & Arpels, it has a dapper sunburst guilloché dial in black that provides a strong contrast to the other pink gold elements. That name though, needs practice to articulate right.
