It’s not every year that a luxury watch brand launches a completely new watch collection but for 2018, Vacheron Constantin did. The FiftySix combines key elements of the manufacture with an insouciant spirit reminiscent of the rock n roll 50s. Specifically, it draws its aesthetics from a museum piece that dates back to – you guessed it – 1956. Known as Ref. 6073, it had a classic design with hidden and peculiar design codes.

The reference watch had lugs that are derived from Vacheron Constantin’s brand emblem, the Maltese cross. Four branches of the cross for four lugs holding the case and strap together. Additionally, the dial elements balance the contemporary with the timeless. Alternating hour numerals and indexes lend easy charm and are coated with SuperLuminova for enhanced legibility.

Variations include a self-winding model, a day-date model and a very dapper complete calendar piece which also has a moon phase display. This watch comes with a brand new in-house manufactured movement, Calibre 1326 which has a beautiful openworked gold oscillating weight. Some might find it a little different from Vacheron Constantin’s usual milieu, but the manufacture promises more FiftySixes to come as the year progresses, so stay tuned.
