It's a good time to be alive in sneaker culture. Nike just unveiled its latest concept: 10 reimagined Air Force 1s and Air Jordan 1s (five of each), designed by a team of women. The iconic shoes, originally designed for guys, are finally getting a female take. It's a step toward more diversity in sneakerhead culture—and a damn good-looking one, too.
The whole concept falls under the name "The 1 Reimagined," an innovative, collaborative effort to drive the Nike's vision forward. (And, let's be real, using the female perspective to recreate a man's shoe is exactly the kind of inclusivity that the male-dominated sneaker culture needs more of.) Footwear Director Andy Caine picked 14 internal Nike employees to work together on the quick-turnaround project. Among them: color and materials specialists, creative directors, and footwear designers from a range of different divisions. From the initial brief—“make some cool shit”—to the final product, the team had just two weeks.
The team created five personas to develop the reimagined sneakers for: explorer, lover, sage, rebel, and jester. Each has details to match its personality—adventurous asymmetrical silhouettes, velvet linings, a corset lacing system. Although they were designed by women with the female in mind, they're actually all unisex. All 10 styles are currently sized up to a women's 12, which equates to a men’s 10.5. They'll be available on limited release on February 7 in New York, and then they'll be available on February 9 on the SNKRS app.
Oh, and if you're a guy who wears bigger than a 10.5, there's good news. Later in the season, Nike will be expanding the size run even further so you can get a pair for yourself. Inclusivity indeed.
