Anthony Vacarello has giant shoes to fill. Hedi Slimane’s run was a highly profitable one to the tune of USD1 billion in sales, and even pleased Pierre Bergé—the former partner of the late Yves Saint Laurent—an approval that was missed by previous forerunners, Stefano Pilati and Tom Ford.
When the great designer himself has gone through every iteration possible in a decades-long career, Vacarello, at this point, isn’t creating anything revolutionary or new. He draws inspiration from Saint Laurent’s old collections instead, but not in the way that you might think.
He takes motifs and qualities from the old to create composites for his current collection—whatever you do, don’t call it a reinvention. Fashion nerds may see glimpses of the past in this pastiche but whether it’s truly clever will be left up to judgement.
There’s much time yet, as Vacarello’s tenure is only just beginning. Until we see more, there’s always this current serving of looks to satiate the next brand stan. As for you lads who don’t mind so much to point out the nods to Saint Laurent of yore, they are pretty safe pieces to crowd your wardrobe with. No burning at the flame this time, not yet at least.
