We’re sure it has happened to you—your girlfriend stays over and borrows your white oxford shirt for work the next day. On her, it looks purposefully over-sized and effortlessly cool. Heck, she could borrow your suit jacket and get away with it by belting it up or hanging it over her shoulders like a Helmut Newton succubus.

You, on the other hand, would be hard-pressed to get away with any of her clothes without looking either extremely creepy or, if she’s into those expensive bandage dresses, then a huge, hairy sausage roll.

But this season, you’ll be much more interested in what’s in her closet, because some of the best-looking men’s jackets and coats seem to be coming straight from the S/S17 womenswear collections. Here’s our pick to have you looking more ‘man-on-a-mission’ and less like a cross-dressing aunty (no offence, Jack Neo).

Soft and slouchy, but with sufficient innate structure to make this khaki coat a shoulder to lean on. Especially great for when you’re in a hurry and it's cold outside, as it goes with nearly everything you throw on. The minimalist snap buttons are dope too.

Pair with... a wide-collar thin white T-shirt and fitted navy joggers, preferably those in an understated tech material (like the cargo-style tapered fit ones from Y3), then slip on a pair of leather penny loafers to up the ante.

There’s something pretty baller about a long coat, especially one that has a nifty side gather that makes the cut of this Crocodile skin-embossed, textured coat flare with just the right amount of asymmetry.

Pair with... a long-sleeved Henley T-shirt in an indigo blue wash and pleated wool trousers, the latter in a burgundy hue if you have it. Add slippers to the mix and an air of disaffected nonchalance to perfect the look.

Thom Browne, the designer behind the men’s line at Moncler Gamme Bleu, might be a menswear fave but this sleek zippered coat by Moncler Gamme Rouge’s Giambattista Valli will have guys sitting up and taking note. The technical prints of archived French architecture that patterned out the coat in sombre grey was a particularly nice touch.

Pair with... a white shirt, collar unbuttoned and a pair of cropped khaki chinos the colour of desert sand (which was incidentally, also one of the inspiration points for the collection). Ace the base with a pair of low-cut, plain white sneakers.

The creative duo behind Lemaire, Christophe Lemaire and Sarah-Linh Tran, have the knack of creating pieces that both sexes want. Take this handsome cropped black jacket, which even has the buttons on the right side so you won’t feel like anything’s amiss when you wear it out with the boys.

Pair with... a black pullover and a pair of deep-wash indigo selvage denim jeans. Think of it as the modern man’s biker jacket style stand-in. Instead of all that leathery weight, ditch the rock-n-roll for this too-cool-for-school ensemble. Pair with suede Chelsea boots in dark grey.
