Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s two novels, Night Flight and Wind, Sand and Stars, were based on the writer’s experiences as a pioneering French airmail pilot and the treacherous, unexplored routes he took in the ’20s. After crashing a number of planes—one such incident left him and his navigator stranded in the Sahara Desert—and sustaining a list of injuries, including a fractured skull, Saint-Exupéry’s went on to write what has been hailed as one of the best-selling books ever published, The Little Prince.
A year after his magnum opus, in an air reconnaissance mission for the French air force, he mysteriously disappeared over the Bay of Biscay.
In Montblanc’s Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Limited Edition writing instrument, its shape and choice of colour is a nod to the writer’s adventures in the skies. Its form depicts his Caudron Simoun plane with rivet-styled engravings on the night-blue resin barrel and cap. Also engraved are the geographic positions of the cities to which Saint-Exupéry once travelled on the cone and a star engraving, a reference to the illustrated star from The Little Prince, on the platinum-coated Au750 solid gold nib.
The other version from this collection is slightly similar and limited to 1,931 pieces—a reference to the year Night Flight was published—with the cap and the barrel of the fountain pen being polished, grinded and treated to give a brass feel of the plane Saint-Exupéry once piloted.
According to Françoise Bastide, a long-time researcher of Saint-Exupéry’s works and life, the writer’s books have been translated into over 260 languages, and that a new translation is published every three months. “When a culture, no matter how isolated—like the tribes of Papua New Guinea [or] the Indians of the Gran Chaco—wants to connect with the culture of the world, the first thing they do is translate Saint-Exupéry,” she proclaimed. What is essential is perhaps invisible to the eye, but it can always be written.
The Montblanc Writers Edition Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Limited Edition is available at all Montblanc boutiques nationwide.
