Professor Stephen Hawking, renowned British theoretical physicist and black-hole theorist has died at the age of 76.

With countless contributions to the cosmology field, Hawking fought against a slow-progressing form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) that left him paralysed as he grew older. He then communicated with a text-to-speech synthesiser through a single cheek muscle.

The former Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge was also the author of the international bestseller, A Brief History of Time.
