BAKALAKI Has Given Us Valid Reasons To Gather Over Aegean Cuisine

Greek Nutella, anyone?

It tickled us to find out from the owners of BAKALAKI that the word doesn’t actually mean anything. A portmanteau and diminutive combined, the name is meant to describe a local joint for Greeks to gather at while being simple enough for anyone to pronounce. This Greek taverna, beautifully decorated without having to rely on the typical colour palettes evoking Santorini, is situated in Tiong Bahru—possibly the last place one would think to find Greek cuisine close as it is to the old pre-war buildings in the heritage district.

Here, they serve unfussy Greek classics along with a slew of Greek tipple, even some sodas to expand your libation vocabulary with. But what we are especially interested in is the corner of the restaurant dedicated to food products and ingredients flown in from Greece. You’ll find everything from olive oil to the Greek version of Nutella. If you’re inspired enough by the food, perhaps it’s time to try your hand at recreating some dishes at home.

BAKALAKI Greek Taverna is at 3 Seng Poh Road. For reservations, contact 6836 3688.
