Tell me if you've heard this before. So an MTV VJ tells us a joke...

The joke: Two cows are standing in a field. One cow says to the other, “Did you hear about the outbreak of mad cow disease?” The other cow replies, “Good thing I’m in a helicopter.”

Right. Hanli Hoefer’s jokes might be a little wanting (or, in her own words, “lame”), but her music taste is something to be admired. It goes through phases, and currently, at the point of the interview, she’s waist-deep in the sounds of Erykah Badu, but that will soon change.

“Being with MTV kinda has introduced me to more music,” she says. “Even music that I’ve heard before but never had the time to listen to properly. It makes me appreciate what goes into producing a song.” But don’t expect to find her in front of the mic at a recording studio anytime soon. As she further mentions, she “played” the piano for eight years, but wouldn’t be able to tell you where middle C is.

Her job as an MTV VJ is the closest Hoefer will ever get to being musical. “We do this thing called World Stage in Malaysia, and the concept of World Stage is putting regional artists and international artists on the same platform.” While bigger name acts like Neon Trees and Justin Bieber might draw the crowd, Hoefer is floored by the regional artists. “They can hold their own against the bigger bands. It’s the ones who are largely unknown that impress me the most because of their passion.”

And what acts should we be on the lookout for? After some thought, Hoefer says, “I love this group called The Internet; the lead is this lesbian chick… and I’m not sure if they are still around, but I like Balance and the Travelling Sounds. They have this really sick cover of [Daft Punk’s “Something About Us”] online.”

And with that, we’ve added two more bands to our playlist.
