The joke: How did the Italian chef die? “He pasta way.”
What Chanel Lyn—speaking in a carefully clipped tone with the ghost of a Singlish lilt— misses most about flying with Singapore Airlines is the unpredictability of meeting people. “Humans surprise you all the time,” she says.
During Lyn’s first month of flying, a passenger of perhaps Nordic background gestured to her and asked for a carpet. A quick burst of the synapses deduced that the man was asking for a blanket, but Lyn still couldn’t contain herself as she walked over to the chief steward with the request.
“And when I returned with the blanket for him, the passenger next to him also asked for a ‘carpet’.” Dividing her time between modelling and studies in tourism and events, Lyn hopes to be “based outside Singapore for a while”.
“Not that I don’t like Singapore,” she quickly adds, “but I like the idea that living elsewhere on your own shapes you as a person.” And it shows—Lyn is stronger and wiser, an adult chiselled out of a block of adolescence from her tenure in the sky.
