With the luxury-sneaker market booming, it was only a matter of time before someone added actual rare metals to the list of shoe-making materials. For Adidas, that meant dropping a splash of 24-karat gold onto the iconic Stan Smith and newly resurrected Rod Laver, both of which will be sold for $110 through the brand's web store from July 15.
The special release—officially called the 999 Noble Metals Pack—is a collaboration between Adidas and Eytzinger, a 167-year-old gold-beating (that is, gold leaf) manufacturer that's the oldest in Germany. Both the Stan Smiths and the Rod Lavers will feature 999 details on the tongue and heel tab in 24K gold leaf, giving the classic, minimalist styles a nice touch of Old World craftsmanship.
Think of them as gilded kicks for this new Gilded Age of Sneakers.
