Man at His Best

Take A Look At The First Images Of Shia LaBeouf As John McEnroe

But does he look anything like him?

As a man who once wore a paper bag over his head to a premiere and sat through a marathon of his own films in the name of art, it's no surprise that Shia LaBeouf would feel a connection to one of the most headline-stealing athletes of all-time.

So we're excited to see the controversial actor portray John McEnroe in a new biopic that charts the rivalry between the American tennis legend and Björn Borg.

LaBeouf has already compared himself to McEnroe, telling The Independent that they are both "passionate, perfectionist, narcissistic." Before saying, "I'm a bit of a caricature also."

Chronicling the 14 times the two met in their careers, the film has already courted (get it?) controversy for not consulting either players during filming, as revealed by McEnroe to The Guardian in September: "I don't know if they are planning on doing the whole movie without input or any type of arrangement from me or Björn," said McEnroe. "I haven't seen anything, and they've already started the movie."

He continued: "It doesn't seem like they are all that interested in talking with me. I don't know how you can do it without ever meeting me. Maybe you could talk to a few of my friends. I can barely remember what I was like 36 years ago when I was 21 years old. It could be entertaining. If it's good, it'd be cool. Let's hope."

Shia has described the film as "truthful, tangible, anchored, human" and noted that he cried the first time he read the script, which is a very Shia LaBeouf thing to do.

Swedish actor Sverrir Gudnason will play the equally Swedish Borg, with a release date still pending.

When asked about his backhand earlier this week, Shia said it was "getting there."

We'll just have to wait and see.
