11 Early Drafts Of Iconic Movie Quotes
Before they were made legendary.
In the pre-production stage, Hollywood movie scripts are usually passed around like Werther's Originals in a bowls club, falling victim to countless edits and rewrites before they're finally conjured to life on our cinema screens.
And the same goes for even the most iconic of lines. Just take a look at some of these memorable movie quotes, collated by Reddit user numendil, that were chopped and changed in the pursuit of perfection.
1 | Star Wars: Episode V The empire Strikes Back
It's well known fact that this line was improvised by Harrison Ford—and thank our lucky stars it was, lest we be saddled with the original Terminator-esque response.
2 | The Matrix
The Wachowski brothers decided to inject some more drama for the final script (presumably because young Neo sounds pretty confused and disinterested in the original). Check out the first draft here.
3 | Pirates of the Caribbean
The original script leaves out a whole host of other memorable Jack Sparrow quotes, including "[...]and then they made me their chief", and "parlooloo, parsnip, par... parley?”
4 | Back to the Future
This line, from Dr. Emmett Brown, has only been slightly altered from the fourth draft of the script, which you can read here.
5 | Taxi Driver
6 | Die Hard
"I wrote 'Yippe-ki-yay, asshole,'" says screenwriter Steven E. de Souza. "But Bruce, on his final take, ad-libbed the 'motherf—er,' much to the amusement of the crew. The studio nervously left it in for the first test screening and the reaction made it permanent. But you don't always know.”
7 | Fight Club
David Fincher originally wanted to use the abortion line straight from the Chuck Palahniuk's novel, but the studio wouldn't allow it. As an act of revenge, Fincher agreed to replace the line as long as they wouldn't ask him to change it once again.
When the studio found out that Fincher had chosen "I haven't been fucked like that since grade school", they begged him to put the abortion line back in. He refused.
8 | V For Vendetta
If we're talking snappy quotes here, the Wachowski brothers probably should have stuck with the original draft.
9 | Star Wars
"The Force" was originally "The force of others", which is a far more heartwarming line, if you ask us.
A litany of other aspects were also scrapped and skewed from late science fiction author Leigh Brackett's original story outline, especially with the Darth Vader character. Not only was he not supposed to be Luke's father, but he also owned a collection of pet gargoyles.
10 | Titanic
Leo would have ruined billions upon billions of overexcited boat trips if he had decided to shut his mouth like he was supposed to.
11 | True Lies
Secret agent Harry Tasker comes across a lot better in the revised version of the script—but the original draft does feature the word "pork", so we don't know which one we prefer. Read the first script here.
