If a recent patent approval is anything to go by, Apple is developing technology that will enable your future headphones to double-up as portable speakers.

While the brand's recent decision to transform its famous white ear buds into wireless monstrosities hasn't been the most popular move... this actually sounds pretty cool.

The patent, which was filed in 2011 and granted this week, suggests that users will be able to switch between in-ear listening and stereo sound by the touch of a button or through sensors within the device that detect the positioning of the headphones.

The iPhone 7 speaker system is already programmed to automatically switch to stereo sound while playing music when the device is in landscape mode and away from the user's face. Take a look at the blueprints below and share your thoughts in the comments. The buds swivel outwards at a 90-degree angle, as shown in the patent image below.

If these work as well as intended, this could signal the end of portable speakers, as well as transforming you into the most annoying guy on the bus.
