14 Of The Best-Sounding Turbocharged Cars Of All Time

Headphones strongly recommended.

1 | Ferrari F40

The sound emanating from the F40's iconic triple exhaust is everything you'd hope from a Ferrari. While the new turbocharged 488GTB sounds good, it doesn't sound this good.

2 | Mercedes-AMG GT S

Mercedes-AMG has a way of making modern turbocharged engines sound better than just about anyone else's. The 4.0 litre twin-turbo in the wonderful AMG GT S is an angry, lovely thing.

3 | Audi Quattro S1

If the Group B era could be distilled into a single round, it'd be the Audi Quattro S1's barking five-cylinder echoing off trees, wastegates chirping away. You could hear this car from miles away and know exactly what it is.

4 | McLaren P1

All of McLaren's 3.8 litre V8 cars sound great, but the P1 with its oversized turbochargers is truly special. With the interior's lack of sound-deadening material and the V8's air intake right over your head, the P1 is a symphony of induction and wastegate.

5 | Alfa Romeo 4C

In addition to looking beautiful, an Alfa Romeo has to sound good. The 4C is especially beautiful and its noise matches it appearance. Ifyou order your 4C with the Sports Exhaust, Alfa sens you the car without a muffler. Wonderful.

6 | Sauber C9

The legendary Sauber-Mercedes C9 sounds like what would happen if you strapped two turbochargers onto a NASCAR stocker's V8. Its loosely street-car-based motor made around 650 horsepower and easily carried the C9 up to 250 mph on the Mulsanne straight.

7 | Subaru WRX STI

The WRX STI's turbocharged flat-four sounds like a tractor crossed with a WRC car. It's easily one of the most distinctive sounding cars on the road.

8 | Ford GT LM GTE

We don't really know what the twin-turbo V6 in the Ford GT street car sounds like yet, but we do know the racing version of the car sounds excellent. Since the street car will use a similar, racing-derived engine, we expect great things. Just listen to the downshifts!

9 | Pagani Huayra BC

The naturally aspirated V12 in the Pagani Zonda is one of the best sounding motors ever fitted to a car, but its turbocharged successor, the Huayra, isn't too shabby either. Especially the Huayra BC, which sounds like a black hole on four wheels.

10 | Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG

We've selected the E63 AMG, but really, any Mercedes equipped with AMG's lovely 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 can go here. AMG truly is the master of making a twin-turbo sound great.

11 | Porsche 935

Porsche's new generation of turbocharged engines sound nice, but they don't hold a candle to the brutal sturm und drang of the flat-six found in the 935 race car. It's just devastating.

12 | Fiat 695 Biposto

The Fiat 500 Abarth is one of the silliest cars you can buy today, in a good way, of course. Fiat made this little turbocharged meatball way louder than it needs to be and we applaud it. The limited edition 695 Biposto sounds even better.

13 | Koenigsegg One:1

Koenigsegg doesn't do anything less than crazy, including engine noise. Its familiar V8 is usually turbocharged to hell and back, and it makes an ungodly noise. The One:1 sounds especially good.

14 | Porsche 919

Porsche's Le Mans-winning 919 may only have a V4, but it sounds like a wild spaceship thanks to its electric motors. Downshifting under braking, it sounds incredibly futuristic with its combination of turbo whoosh and energy-recovering whine.
