The Ultimate Gift Guide 2016: Staycation
That yearning to pose next to the Doric columns of Rome or being layered in the latest winter garb while knee-deep in a waddle of penguins—a vacation is good for the constitution. But such far-flung wandering requires a wellspring of time and deep pockets. So, plan B: staycations, which let you get away without going too far. But where, you ask?

Step out of Tanjong Pagar MRT and you’ll see Oasia Hotel, a scarlet edifice with patches of green creepers. The hotel’s name is apt as it operates on three wellness pillars: refresh, refuel, recharge. When you’ve enough of working out at the 24-hour gym, head to gin bar Cin Cin, the Marmalade Pantry for some grub, or the lounge (again, only available to club guests) that’s well-stocked with all sorts of refreshments, depending on the time of the day The rooms are nothing to be scoffed at either. The Super and Deluxe Rooms, though 23sqm, don’t feel small when you’re viewing the cityscape from the full-length windows. It might look like home out there but, in here, it’s like you’ve stepped into another world.

After months of renovation, the InterContinental Singapore is looking as grand as ever. The property, while decked out in contemporary luxe styling (chandeliers, high ceilings, colonial pillars in the lobby), still retains a distinctive ’20s feel. It’s not in your face, but Peranakan motifs are found throughout, as seen in the floor tiles and the hotel crockery. There are 403 rooms, but the rustic Peranakan Shophouse Rooms are definitely worth checking out. Head down to the Club Lounge (Shophouse Rooms and Suites guests only) for afternoon tea, evening cocktails and an assortment of finger food. For a proper meal, try Ash & Elm, where the open kitchen gives you the feel of a home. What really stands out, though, is the inclusion of a free, guided heritage trail tour that happens every Saturday afternoon, where you get to discover the history behind the area’s landmarks.

Live it up like Bruce Wayne Much like it’s legendary counterpart in New York, the St Regis Singapore feels like an expertly tailored suit should—luxurious, fantastic to the touch and tailored to your needs. Living here, you start to feel like billionaire playboy, Bruce Wayne; the interiors are opulent, complete with plush custom furnishing and art pieces, but never falls into tacky territory. Our favourite part of their room is their bathroom, furnished with marble, and anchored with a tub that comes complete with a screen and audio surround sound system built in. All in all, those are great reasons to never leave your room… except that you can unwinde at their Remède Spa or opt for a session at their Mani:Pedi:Cure Studio by Bastien Gonzalez. No frills, flowery scents, and needless soaking in weird coloured solutions, just straight up pampering of your hands and feet. I mean, do you think Batman would fight crime with unmoisturised fists? I don’t think so. While St Regis is as good as they come, what truly set it apart, is their software, that comes in the form of their signature Bulter Service. Ever-present when called upon, attentive to your needs, but never intrusive, it lends a nice personalise touch to your little getaway, just don’t call him Alfred.
