Sometimes, all you need to liven up a humdrum commute are a good pair of headphones, a portable music player, and your favourite tunes. Time magically flies by and before you know it, you’ve reached your destination.

While the songs you pick are a personal preference, it’s always a good shout to go for headphones that match the genres you prefer. So if you’re a basshead (or is basshole the better term?), the Audio-Technica ATH-WS770iS may just be right up your alley.

Out of the box, the gunmetal grey colour with gold accents is strikingly beautiful, the brushed aluminium housing lending itself a certain look of sophistication.

But of course, we’re all here to know exactly how the headphones sound like. And it doesn’t disappoint, if you pick the right songs to go with it.

Whether it’s hiphop, electronica, hard rock or metal, songs optimised to deliver maximum bass response shine here. The headphones’ 53mm Deep Motion Drivers output punchy yet rich-sounding bass that doesn’t overwhelm the senses, and the top-mounted PCB deftly manages distortion. Midrange, trebles and highs are rendered smoothly, albeit lacking slightly in clarity. A modest amount of soundstage was present, and the over ear design provided wonderful external noise isolation once fitted properly. So in essence, we don’t recommend using these for live orchestral pieces, but definitely a fairly decent option for a bassy all-rounder that doesn’t break the bank.

On long commutes, the pleather earpads and headband made for a comfortable listening experience that is very much welcomed, although the headphones can start to feel a bit heavy for those not used to prolonged wear. Storage is simple enough-swivel the headphones flat and you’re good to go. Or just hang them around the neck like a fashion accessory, which looks a lot cooler. Seems like it’s time to say goodbye to those uneventful MRT rides.

The Audio-Technica ATH-WS770iS is available at all authorised Audio-Technica stores, resellers and retails for SGD168.
