Weekend Agenda: Yo Momma’s Day

All about yer mum. Drinks, teas, desserts and… getai?

It’s Mother’s Day this Sunday, so we are holding back on the yo momma jokes. This weekend should be all about the female parent in your life. Here are some recommendations.

1 | Treat her to drinks and sweets at the Botanic Gardens

At the Halia a whole array of drinks and desserts inspired by the mums of its chef and mixologist are ready for your tastebuds. And you betcha she deserves that drink after all the years you’ve put her through. So it’s a good thing they’ve got them cocktails juiced up with vodka like the Quiquempoix Kiss (SGD24++), sounding deliciously fruity with its mix of midori, cherry reduction and sour apple liqueur. If dessert is more her thing, there’s the Athenasia (SGD12++), named after the mother and newborn baby daughter of Pastry Chef Bill Dionysopoulos, a work of art involving lavender bavarois served on crispy kataifi nest, green rhubarb coulis, poached rhubarb and tuille & homemade strawberry sorbet. If that isn’t enough, she’ll also get a 50 percent voucher for selected Halia Provisions merch. And that, bros, that’s how you get to treat your mum, and then get her to cook something for you later.

Visit Halia at Singapore Botanic Gardens at 1 Cluny Road, Singapore Botanic Gardens. Call 8444 1148 or email general.hsbg@thehalia.com for reservations.

2 | Have brunch with her at Fort Canning

The theme for their menu is “Fresh, Beautiful and Healthy” so this will already be a step-up from your usual Saturday shenanigans. Up a steep flight of stairs flanked by trees into an elegant black and white colonial setting, Lewin Terrace presents a brunch menu (SGD68++) for Mother’s Day that includes Newby Teas in the package. From 11.30am to 2.30pm, you’ll nosh on Japanese-French fusion food paired with free-flow divine teas. Or, if your mum so fancies, top up an additional SGD 68++ for boozy pairings of whites, reds or sparkling ones. A later afternoon tea priced also at SGD68++ will bring you more desserts, just in case she prefers the sweet stuff instead.

For reservations, contact Lewin Terrace at 6333 9905.

3 | Soul Getai atop a rooftop

Nothing wrong with just eating and drinking, but at some point, you’ll want to be looking for some other form of fun. So take her to Chinatown, at Pearl Hill City Park to be exact. The good folk behind Getai Electronica and Getai Ethnica now bring you Getai Soul, a two day soul festival set on this Mother’s Day weekend. Expect local acts like Charlie Lim & The Mothership and Vandetta, along with a slew of international soul-inspired acts and the more traditional Cantonese opera and Teochew puppetry. Why? Why the heck not?! To whet your appetite, check out the teaser trailer for The Getai Group’s upcoming Chinatown Soul documentary below.
