There’s a tendency, among certain establishments, to present a smorgasbord of meals featuring exotic ingredients. Doesn’t matter how they fit into the overall taste of the dish, the stranger and the cooler sounding it is the better. And the result is more often than not a confused mess.

There’s none of that gimmicky rubbish at Cheek By Jowl. Following its takeover of the space that once housed Sorrel in Boon Tat Street, Chef Rishi Naleendra steers with a deft hand. The ingredients have been chosen purposefully, and everything from texture to flavour profile makes perfect sense.

Five snacks and five courses will set you back SGD88++ for dinner, not a bad deal for such quality food. The pickled sardine nestled in a briny broth and the dessert featuring a laksa leaf ice cream were especially impressive. What a treat.
