The founder of Unlisted Collection has a thing for chairs: plush leather, metallic stools, meshed oddities; the works. But none of these fine specimens furnishes his home. the wife’s not a fan of his armchair obsession. So he parks them at six of his boutique hotels and over 20 finely conceptualised restaurants found in Singapore, Shanghai, Sydney and London.

Talk about obsession. It’s easy to romanticise how the former litigator decided that seizing things from bankrupts wasn’t his cup of tea and went on to invest in the more cordial nature of hospitality instead—managed under his enterprise. 

But none is more remarkable than how he has built this empire in less than 15 years. We are talking about one new hotel or restaurant a year, establishments that continue to embrace a brand of authenticity and vision that’s synonymous with the man himself.

“A successful man is one who will be remembered fondly by his family and friends for having led a happy and fulfilling life,” Lik Peng says. “No point being the most successful asshole in the cemetery and nobody mourns you.“

For that, Loh Lik Peng is Esquire Singapore’s Man of Our Time this month.
